Subject: Touching Money

I have always been told its the dirtiest thing on the earth and to always be careful when handling it. I watched today as a great (step) grandmother gave a child a dollar bill, the child being under the age of two years.

Wrong or no?

I've also heard that money is the dirtiest thing you can handle. On the other hand, you don't want to raise a child to be a germaphobic. Giving a toddler a dollar bill is safer than giving him coins but I'm not sure how responsible it is to give them either unless you are at the cash register letting the child pay for a purchase.

Why is it wrong to handle money for a kid below 2 years? Just make sure he wash his hand afterwards.

Money is really dirty think about all the people who have touched it before you that could be hundreds.

It's dirty, but I can tell you no kid will turn down money that is for sure. Just make sure they wash their hands after use.

Yes, money is very dirty (remember when mom used to warn you not to put it in your mouth?), but I have never heard of anyone who got violently ill from touching it. Just make sure to wash the kids hands.

If you think of how many hands one coin or one note must pass through, then it is very, very dirty.

A two year old doesn't know the value of money so there is no reason to think they will not turn it down. They don't know what it is other than a piece of paper to tear up.

Saying; just wash their hands isn't so easy. If you are out and about, it's not always easy to do that, you might not have access to a sink.

Metal coins and paper bills are generally too dry to support bacteria. But the paper and the metal itself can carry some of the germs and other bits of dirt and gunk that the last person who handled it had on their hands.

Money isn't dirtier than any of the other things that are touched by a lot of different people.

That is true and I would rather my kids had money in their hands rather than other stuff.

When I was little, my parents always reminded me to wash my hands after handling money, especially if I was going to eat. This has not given me any fear of germs, I just realize that money changes a lot of hands, so it is not a good idea to grab a sandwich & eat without washing hands first. I think children need to be taught this early on. It's just one of many life skills.
