Subject: | Stretching the Esophagus | |
My husband recently had his esophagus stretched because it was too narrow and he was having trouble swallowing food or drink. It was literally sticking in his throat and he would end up vomiting. Has anyone else had this procedure done? |

I have not had this done but I did know someone who had to have it. Did the doctor explain what caused this problem? Surely your husband has not had this problem all his life. |

Wow, I have honestly never heard of this condition or this procedure. I would be curious to know what caused this as well. |

My grandfather had this done a few years ago, and he has been doing great ever since. The doctor was not ever really clear what caused it to narrow in the first place, but after the procedure he has not had any more issues with choking or indigestion. |

Esophageal Stricture. I have it. ther are many things that cause it. Most noteably acid refulx burning the lining of the esphagus and then scar tissue builds up. Theer ar different surgeries for the consition. One is stretching. Muscles are injected so they becom loose to allow food to flow down easily. Another is botox injections. But teh diet is changed drastically. Another is removal of some of teh tissue through any number of methods. Usually small light beam or lasar iis used to remove scar tisue. Often surgeons reccomend the daily use of an acid reducer to prevent re build up of stricture or narrowing. For me there is no choice. Being diabetic they cant do surgery. So I usualy use a liquid diet. My scar tissue or stricture is from years of GERD with no treatment. So its pretty much chronic burns. I get to teh point that I not only vomit but this last go around i brought up blood. Hopefully your husband never had that. I am so glad that the surgery worked. He is avery lucky man to have a great surgeon! julie |
