Subject: | Self Harming | |
I have a friend who is receiving treatment for self harming. Thing is I don't know how to be supportive because I don't understand it. Why do it-what does it do for them? |

Well, it is a way of coping, when the person is otherwise unable to express their feelings or cope with what is going on. It can be dangerous too-accidental death can occur, even though that don't mean it. I believe it comes down to control, and if you just suddenly stop the self harmer it can really mess them up. |

It is more common with young teens than any other age but can happen. My son did this for a while. He said it helped him to calm down as he could focus on the pain. Counseling and proper medications have helped a lot. |

What exactly are they trying to self treat if you do not mind me asking? I know somethings are far more dangerous than others, so I thought I should ask just to make sure I know what we are talking about here. |

I think stress is a big cause besides craving attention for some other people. It worries me that people are out there doing some of the bad things I have read about to themselves, even worse it could be someone close to you and you would not even notice. |
