Subject: Safe Sun Times

My sister is a sun worshipper and she assures me strongly that beyond about 5pm you are unlikely to tan, let alone burn. However I have incredibly fair skin and just don't trust that.

Is there a time when the sun becomes 'safe'?

I don't know about a specific time of day but I do know that a certain amount of sunshine is good for your in spite of what you hear. When need to spend time in the sun for our skin to produce vitamin D in our body. I imagine with very fair skin you burn very easily though. I have managed a sunburn late in the day before although I don't know if it was after five. My wife is also very fair skinned but believe it or not she not only does not tan easily but she doesn't burn easily either.

When its sleeping (night time)? :)

Really I have heard that too but I have still managed getting a small tan in evening hours, when the sun is still out, kind of, but not nearly as much as during the day time.

Yes, it is much safer to be outside in the evening, late afternoon or even early morning. But, I would still take precautions until about 7 pm. I do try to get out and get a little sun everyday, as Philbo pointed out our bodies need some direct sunlight to be healthy. Of course, all things in moderation.

I have an olive complexion and don't burn very easily. I can get a sunburn but I have to be really stupid about it. When summer comes I am ok if I stay out of the sun between 11:00AM and 3:00PM until my tan builds up. Once I have a good tan it doesn't matter how long I stay out in the sun.

Yes, I am aware of the need for sun exposure-however, on a normal day that isn't overly dull or overcast, sun exposure on exposed hands and face is enough after about ten to fifteen minutes-you don't need to cook to get your vitamins!
