Subject: Quitting Smoking

I have been a smoker on and off for over 10 years. The only time I quit for a long period of time was when I was pregnant, but then I started right back. I would love to know the best way to quit that will not cost me a fortune. I realize the answer is most likely quitting cold turkey, but that is easier said than done. I am interested in Chantix but have heard it is very expensive. Does anyone know of any proven ways to quit that won't require a bundle of money upfront?

Why did you start smoking again? Honestly I don't understand why people start again after successfully quitting.

I went cold turkey, having been smoking three packs a day. I quit seven years ago, after smoking for nine years, and haven't looked back.

Well -- how about nicorette? Or using gum or some kind of hard candy?

It is hard to quit smoking. My mom used the patch and gum for awhile, neither with much success. She just used willpower to finally kick the habit.

Set small goals- Start by slowing down- smoking less each day. Cutting cold turkey is hard and you more than likely will go back to it.

There is hypnosis now available as well. Check it out with your insurance company- I think some medicines and other treatments are covered.

I quit cold turkey, and so did my father. I think in the end you really need to want to do it and setting small goals is a good way to ease into the process. Start exercising and changing your life before quitting and odds are you just will not want to do it if you are living a healthier life.

I have never smoked, but my husband quit just on will power alone. He did find it very difficult, but the amount of money he saved by not smoking really helped him.

I actually stayed quit during my pregnancy and until my baby was 5 months old. Unfortunately, at that time, I was in a very abusive marriage and the stress of dealing with my then husband made me want to smoke again. I know that is not a legit reason, but stress can do crazy things to you sometimes. I just wish I had the will power to completely change some things. I'd love to quit smoking and start exercising to get as healthy as I should be.
