Subject: Kids got some?

Lately my youngest has been learning to talk and we take turns trying to figure out exactly what she is saying but we have no idea. The oldest who is 4 years older says he can understand her, but I don't get it. Can kids really understand "baby talk"?

I've always wondered this, like on "Baby Geniuses", if you've ever seen that movie!

Honestly, I really don't know. Have you asked your youngest to maybe translate what the youngest is saying? If you do have your oldest translate it for you maybe you'll start to understand it, maybe the baby was just speaking unclear to your ears.

I really wonder, I have heard my son (22mo)and cousin (19 mo)hold a conversation and they seem to be able to understand, they even laughed. I really do wonder.

It could be that the young ones don't care if they don't really understand what the other is saying exactly -- unlike adults who need to understand and react correctly. The little guys might just be enjoying each other's company in the moment and are happy to babble away understanding what little they can and filling in what they don't.

Happily kids don't care about details, they just love unconditionally.

My 2 year old has recently started talking constantly. I probably get what he says maybe 50% of the time. It's just so cute because you know they are trying so hard to tell you something.

I watched a 15 month old and an almost 10 month old recently babble back and forth and they loved it so I see what you are saying. I still find it a little shocking though, I can listen for hours on end and only pick up a couple of words.

I just realized my own daughter has been saying the word "kitty" for days now, referring to our cats. Yet she sees other babies and they babble away as if they completely understand each other. Funny how that works.

I think it is very possible. studies shoe that twins actually speak later on average than a single child birth. It has been said that they are content "speaking" to one another.
