What is the best way to choose your doctor? To me it seems like there should be more then going through the phone book and seeing who has openings. So what is your routine and/or criteria when finding a personal doctor?

In Canada here we look around desperately for a doctor willing to take on new patients. They are in short supply here. We can't afford to be too fussy although there are limits. I did have a doctor who for awhile who I ended up not thinking much of. It was difficult to find someone else but I eventually did.

In past I've always gone to a doctor who was recommended by a friend. I also like to find a doctor who is in practice by him/herself and hopefully isn't too swamped to spend time with the patients.

I go to the same doc I've had since I was 6 years old! For specialists, I have just gone with his advice. If I change docs when he retires I think I'll have to go with a friend's advice maybe.

I used to go on recommendations from co-workers, but since I work at home now I do not have that option. My relatives all live too far away for me to ask. I just go through my insurance directory and pick one that is close to me. If I don't like them, then I switch. I normally stay with a doctor for years though once I am comfortable with them.
