Subject: | Helping Your Neighbors | |
I notice over the years we learn less about our neighbors. There use to be a time when someone new that came into the neighborhood we would welcome. It seems we have gotten away from that I wonder why. |

People are becoming more closed into themselves because of the unknown. It's really sad because I moved into a neighborhood about a year ago and still only know about 4-5 of the neighbours, most of those is just to say hi. |

When I was young we used to know every person in my building and most of the people in the neighborhood. I think that because more people tend to move away for job opportunities these days. No one seems to stay in one place anymore. (Sounds like a song!) If you want to get to know your neighbors, I'd suggest that you try to make it a habit to walk around your neighborhood and just wave at them at first. As people see you often, they will become friendlier and you can start conversations. I guess that proves that walking is good for you in many ways! |

We had similar issues when we moved where we are. Its a semi-isolated community to start with, and most people are retired or professionals without much spare time for chatting or playing outside. We took around small gifts the first year for the holidays and between that and trick-or-treating plus road work (we have a private dirt road everyone helps work on) we've met most of them in the three years we've been here. But it took time and several of them have moved and the new people are nicer. |

I was thinking that the heat wave that we have now is a good reason to get to know your neighbors. If you have seen an elderly person in your building but haven't said hello before this, try knocking on their door now and offer to give some help if they need it. Use it as a reason to see if they are all right. Many elderly people really can't feel that the heat is terrible and they might be in distress without knowing it Maybe ask a person that you have seen at the mail boxes if they know if there are any elderly or ill people in the building who might need help in this heat. You can check in on them and offer to go shopping. Many ill people can risk their life if they go out to shop in this heat. You will be surprised that after the heat wave has passed, people might be much friendlier! |

I never paid much attention to it, but the observation is true. I guess I could find a lot of excuses but it boils down to the fact we are too busy these days looking after #1. |

This is so true. I live in a small village of about 25 housesand I still dont know everyone. I suppose we are all just busy getting on with our lives. |

As everyone is so busy with making money for survival, they don't have time for all these things. I think that the fact that we normally leave the house at the first sign of sun rise and won't be home till the sun set, we also can't get a chance to meet them. It is only when we have holidays on weekend, we get to see our neighbors.Even at tis time, most of us will be busy with our shopping spree. |

I am very friendly with my neighbor. I help them with their household work if I am free. They call me for dinner and lunch sometime. |
