We're all, I'm sure, dying in the heat just this past weekend. Ok, at least those of us on the East coast. How do you stay cool, and healthy in this heat? |

Keeping drinking lots of water. It is so easy to dehydrate in the hot weather. |

Since I don't have air conditioning, beating the heat is hard. Also since my sister is going through chemotherapy and that makes her terribly sensitive to cold things, cooling off is harder still. But I have found a few things that can help anyone fight the heat a bit. Happily, the past few days has been a little better because the thick walls of my old fashioned apartment house hasn't collected all the daytime heat to give it off yet. We are a little cooler than it can get. This year I bought large fans that don't blow with that turbo wind, but in a more gentle way and blows on a bigger area. I have two pointed at her bed, from the side and the top. Two fans will help anyone keep cooler when pointed at different parts of the body. I also bought a few of those freezer bags that harden to a big ice block. I wrap them up in bath towels and it can be unwrapped and the cold towels can be put on arms and legs to cool off. SHe can't touch the ice blocks or she is in pain, but the towels are just right. My sister still can't drink anything cold, her face feels as if it is being scrubbed by sand with any cold breeze, and her mouth feels filled with sand if she drinks any cold drinks. But I did find that a drink that is just cooled in the fridge can be tolerated and so she can have a small cool drink. Loose light clothing is still good to wear, and put your hair up in a tight bun. A loose bun traps hot air and sweat and makes your scalp warm. And I try not to remember that it isn't even summer yet. ARG!! |
