Why does this seem to sometimes sneak up on a person? I know many have this running in their families, who are checked each year and nothing for the longest time - then blam, they have diabetes. Is this one of the harder things to spot right on for doctors? |

Eating too many sweets will cause anyone's blood sugar to rise. What makes one a diabetic is when your body either quits producing insulin, which lowers the blood sugar, or can no longer adequately utilize the insulin that the body is producing. You put too much of a sugar overload on those insulin receptors and "boom" it's like you've blown a fuse all of a sudden. |

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago. I don't know how much it had to do with it; but he had been eating basically one meal a day and not very good ones at that. He just didn't take good care of himself. He would snack occasionally, but didn't really eat good balanced meals. Of course, not many do anymore. |

Diabetes is often undiagnosed for years before it gets so out of control that it gets noticed. It really doesn't come on suddenly but the symptoms are brushed off for a long time. The only way it can come on suddenly is for the pancreas to be injured. |

My aunt had diabetes for years that went untreated. Even the doctor missed it but they hadn't been testing for it. She had high blood pressure and high cholesterol and when they investigated those they discovered she had diabetes also. The doctor said that many times the three go hand in hand. She is being treated now with insulin injections so it's under control but they are worried she may have damaged the nerves in her feet and legs. Only time will tell I guess. |

If you know the signs then you can actually see the build up to diabetes. My mother in law was diagnosed with insulin resistance-so called pre-diabetes. It was through a regular blood draw that she has for another condition. So she was picked up, and told to diet. With weight loss and exercise she has now staved this off-she is no longer insulin resistant. This I would say is the best possible outcome-found early and with lifestyle changes she may never ever become diabetic. |

I had thought most got diabetes from their family genes, but yes I have heard that not taking care of yourself proper (eating tons of sweet sugary things, having your body be used to it, etc) could cause this just the same. I wonder how many people have diabetes for this reason alone. |

My mom was recently told that there is a strain of diabetes in her blood, she was immediately put on a special diet and then she tested negative, she has been doing her best to keep it at bay since then. |

Did they told your mother was was the cause for her condition? What did her diet include, I would like to know, if you don't mind me asking? |
