Subject: | Court OKs NYC calorie-count rule for restaurants | |
New York City officials can require fast-food restaurants to post signs telling customers how many calories are in their meals, a federal judge ruled on Wednesday. "The required disclosure of calorie information is reasonably related to the government's interest in providing consumers with accurate nutritional information," U.S. District Judge Richard Holwell said in his ruling in the court in lower Manhattan. Source http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN1636081320080416 Society is making a move towards eliminating foods that are bad for our health. Theoretically, this is good, but do you think it is a infringement on your rights? Shouldn’t you be able to do what you want to with your body? This reminds me of the movie Demolition Man. |

I don't know, I can see both sides of the argument. The government would ban alcohol if they weren't making so much money off of it. |

I don't think that this instance is so bad. Simply making restaurants disclose calories to consumers isn’t that big a of a deal, and it helps people be able to better watch their diet. When they start banning foods because they are unhealthy, that’s when it gets iffy. |

It won't infringe on my rights, I'd still eat what I want to eat. I'd be very angry if the government stopped me from eating at a fast food restaurant for one reason or another. The last thing I want is for the government to treat me like they were my parents. If they think that putting the calorie count on fast food would help me make a different decision then that;s fine but don't tell me if I can or can't eat anything. |

I like the push towards better labelling. Its a great reminder that you need to hit the gym more after downing the bucket of ice cream. While its great to be able to eat what you want sometimes its impossible to decide which choice is healthier based on the information provided (or not provided). |
