Subject: | Cat scratches | |
My son got a nasty scratch from our kitten this morning. I cleaned it with water and put some neosporin on it. Is there anything else out there that can be used to treat it. I don't want it getting infected. Just make sure its clean? |

The worst thing that might happen is that an unknown allergy that your child might have can be set off by the scratch. A friend had this and her doctor called it "cat scratch fever." The symptoms are: fatigue, swollen glands, and can feel something like the flu. To make sure the wound is clean, don't just rinse it, put running water on it for a full five minutes. That's to make sure that all cat saliva that your cat had on its paws is completely washed off. They say that you should not use antibacterial lotion or cream on an animal bite. A bite is different from a cut or scrape because the bacteria in an animal's saliva can actually grow and become stronger with a lotion! After that, you really need to make sure that your child has had a recent tetanus shot, like within the past eight years. An animal bite can give anyone tetanus! Until you can be certain that your child is not going to have a bad reaction from the scratch and anything that was on your cat's paw when scratched your child, you should consider going to the doctor to make sure all will be well. |

When I get scratched by my cat I always use alcohol or an atibacterial cream. That will help with any infection. |

I`ve heard that cat scratches can be bad. I would take the advice above to make sure that doesn`t happen to your son. I don`t have cats anymore. |

We have softpaws for our cats here at the house when family and kids come to visit. I know not all cats like these, ours would chew them off at the start then gave up, but its a suggestion to avoid booboos in the future. |

I normally rinse with water for a bit, then soap and water, then iodine. I've always disliked cats for this reason myself. Their poo is dangerous for pregnant people and the biting and scratching that they all do at some point is also more dangerous than it needs to be. Not worth the effort, lol. |
