Subject: Cake or CAKE?

I need to make a really special cake for a friend's party. It's been a while since I've eaten anything rich and really special. Because I have diabetes, I was thinking of making a "diabetic" cake, a cake that I usually make when asked to bring dessert. It's a cake that is mainly a plain, low sugar cake with lots of pretty use of fruit on it.

When another friend heard that I was bringing the cake, she asked if I can make a cake that everyone will enjoy. I guess that means that she hasn't liked my plain -- but really pretty -- cakes.

Should I make a spectacular cake from a recipe that is rich and sweet and that I can only have a sliver of at the most, or should I do a really pretty, but plain healthy cake?

Well with cake most people don't care about how healthy they are. It's cake people usually don't think about how bad it is for you. But, maybe make two cakes. A big, sugary cake, and a small pretty healthy cake? :)

I think what is important is to keep in mind that when you are asked to bring something its not you that is supposed to be the person you bake with in mind. While I am sure your friends know you are diabetic, if they asked for a cake they are probably expecting a regular sugar coma inducing spectacle. Unless the friend who asked you to bring a cake (as opposed to the other one who gave her opinion) said to bring a fruit decorated one for diabetic diets, I'd make either just the regular one or a regular one and the diabetic one for yourself.

I'm sure that sounds rather mean-ish, but just because your diet doesn't allow for regular soda if they asked you to bring soda would you only bring diet?

I'd say if it was your party to go for the healthy cake but since it is your friends I would opt for the sweet-rich cake or maybe make one of each?? You never know someone else at the party might appreciate a choice.

You could make a normal sweet and rich cake and then make your low sugar recipe as cupcakes. Then you can keep some at home and offer them as a substitute to anyone that wants them. I agree that when you are asked to bring something it is usually for the majority of the group. I make some killer baked beans that everyone loves. Well everyone but me, but I always bring them because they are such a hit.

I think I would make the rich one. It is more for the others coming to the party than for yourself.

OK, I think I will go with the rich dessert. People who need to watch their diet can stick to the fruit bowl.

Oh boy, it's been years since I've worked with rich ingredients. I am going to go with some sort of decadent chocolate concoction that will knock their socks off.

Goodness, now where did I put that America's Kitchen report on the best chocolate to bake with?

This is going to be fun. It's been ages since I've baked for fun and not for health. I just need to NOT taste anything from the bowl, and maybe just have a taste of it when it's done.

Thanks everyone, for your opinions!

I agree, make the rich cake for your friend; make the diabetic cake for you own party. If you are asked to bring something special, it should be with the person of honor in mind.

If you can take both, that would be nice, but be prepared to take home most of the low sugar one, because most people really love the sweets at party settings.
