Subject: Cadavar bone or your own?

I had neck fusion surgery in 2003. I had the choice of using cadavar bone or my own bone from my hip. I chose my own bone. I looked up online and found that smokers have a better chance of a good fusion with their own bone. And also I give blood and if I had cosen cadavar bone they wouldn`t let me donate anymore. It did hurt a lot and the synthetic bone they used to replace it dissolved and the muscle pulled away. Now I have a sore hip with a dent in it. If I had to choose again I would choose my own bone again. I had back suregry too but they used my own bone around the disc for the fusion.

Wow lilbit. I didn't know that there was a choice. I would probably choose my own bone as well. As long as it didn't make me weaker in the area they were taking it from.

Good luck with your surgery.

I would opt for my own bone because I have heard that there was an instance when cadaver bones were used on patients and they were not tested for diseases beforehand. Many people who were given the cadaver bones to use became ill later on.

As long as there might be a problem with the cadaver bones not being disease free, I would always opt for using my own bones, blood and other products for any operation.

Kris , it actually did cause me more problems with my hip because the synthetic bone they used to replace the real bone dissolved. Now 5 years later my hip still hurt. Sometimes I limp. Between my back and my hip I`m lucky I can even walk.

my husband had a cervical fusion done. they used cadaver bone but he is allowed to donate blood with no problem. He is lucky I guess and his dopctor ha dteh bone sample tested before hand for all kinds of thinsg befor ebeing used, and he also had that new polymer backup incase the bone didnt work. I knwo of some eople who ahd surgeries and used cadaver only to discover years later they now have HIV or other diseases because the bone was harvested illegally.

ANYONE has a better result using their own bones. The chances for rejection are much lower and the introduction of new disease processes is zero.
