Subject: Blood clots

I just got back from the funeral parlor. My cousins husband passed away on Sunday. He was 51. We were told that he had a blood clot that went to his heart and he fell and broke his neck.

This just happened to my uncle about 2 months ago. Same thing - blood clot and fell and passed away.

My favorite uncle passed away 2 years ago and they said the same- blood clot to his heart.

It seems odd to me that so many people in my family are having these problems. After the death of my uncle my mom and her brothers and sisters all went to have their hearts checked (stress tests).

There must be something that can be done prior to this happening.

One thing that I have heard recommended to some older people is to take a small children's aspirin daily to reduce the tendency for the blood to clot. I have even heard a doctor make that recommendation.

It's probably something in your family's genetics that is causing deaths like this. It's very heard to detect a blood clot and once it starts to travel you can be in real danger.

Taking a baby aspirin isn't a bad idea. One a day won't hurt and it could only help.

Your family should keep going to their doctor the way they have been doing and they should also have a frank discussion with him about what is happening.

Yes, doctors do tell those at risk to take a small dose of asprin every day, it helps to thin the blood. I would also find out if there are any genetic links to blood clotting, then there maybe something you can do about it for yourself.

2 of the people were only in-laws but my uncles. It's sad really. My mom started to take aspirin about 2 years ago-

What age do you think is the right age to start taking a baby aspirin a day?

A baby aspirin a day helps to thin the blood and can be instrumental in preventing clots. There is also an Rx medication called Plavix that can prevent clotting in people prone to it. If clots run in your family I would ask your doctor about Plavix.

What do you think?
