Subject: | Bee/Wasp/Yellow Jacket Stings | |
My daughter got stung, probably by a yellow jacket, but I didn't see it. Her finger swelled way up and turned red and purple. It was alarming, but when I called the nurse hotline, they said as long as her eyes and nose weren't puffy and she wasn't wheezing, it was a normal reaction. Does that sound right? The last time I got stung was when I was 8, so I don't remember. My mom gets stung all time, and she's allergic. |

There are different stages of allergic reactions. There is allergic like your daughter seems to have had and then there is closing airways, epi-pen needing allergies. While she may build up a further allergy at this time it is not life threatening. Each time she gets stung (should it happen again) it will be important to note if the reaction is worse. |

You're right to question the nurse, but I think that as long as your daughter could breath easily, you got the right answer. It would be a good idea to mention this occasion the next time she goes to her pediatrician. Her doctor will then be in a position to let you know if there is any reason to keep on the look out or to calm down and relax knowing that your daughter had a moderate reaction to the sting. Poor kid, is she OK now or is she more afraid of bees or wasps than she was before she was stung? |

I am VERY allergic. I carry an epi pen and take Benydril imediatley then rush to the er. I get horrible reactions. I swell up and my skin ripps. Sometimes I have trouble breathing when I swell that is probably what the nurse was talking about. Its a finger so I wouldn't worry too much. The harm is if her throught swells. That shouldn't be an issue for this particular sting. Good Luck ! |

I guess by what your told the nurse she could tell that it was maybe a medium allergic reaction? I'm not sure if there is a doctor term for it, but thats what I am thinking. |
