Subject: Anxiety Attacks

I work in a call center and every once in awhile when the job become quite stressful we lose a few employees to stress. Usually they start have anxiety attacks first and when it gets real bad they go to the doctor not necessarily knowing what is wrong with them. I fortunately handle the stress quite well but it is sad to see friends go through it. Often it takes a long time from them to recover. I know how to manage my own stress but is there more that I could do to help my friends. Not all my management techniques work for everyone.

I get a lot of anxiety attacks and they are very scary. Even though I know what is happening there are times I want to go to the ER knowing that nothing much could be done there.

When I feel one starting I try to keep my mind off it by knitting or doing logic puzzles or watching television.

The attacks are not easy to control and once you're in the middle of one it gets harder and harder to stop it. I find I have to stop mine right away or I end up wandering around my apartment in fear, tears, and swearing that I can't breath even though I know that I am able to breath.

Anxiety attacks can be quite scary. I have had them myself but mine was actually caused by medication given to me for my diabetes. It seems a little strange to me that so many at one place of employment are having anxiety attacks. I have worked in a call center and know it is stressful work it just seems strange.

Wow, that does sound like a stressful job, and the logic in me says that can't be good for long term health! ;)

I don't know how you can help your coworkers, but maybe your workplace should have some stress management seminars!

I have anxiety attacks as well and they are one of the worst things I've ever experienced. For the most part they are infrequent now thanks to some medication that I take. When I have one they are overwhelming and I have medication for that as well.

There are times I can "talk" myself through them but if it doesn't work then it gets very scary.

I knew a person that was barely 21 when she was promoted to a manager at a call center and within her first year she had a heart attack. A ton of people quit after that thinking the place was cursed or something to give a 20yr old that much stress.

I can sympathise. Anxiety attacks are awful, that feeling of not being able to breath, a hollow chest and the palpitations are awful. I ofetn find myself getting anxious about having an anxiety arttack.

Unfortunately when they lure in new workers with the promise of easy money they forget to tell them how rude the average caller is, whether inbound or outbound. There is no real was to manage the stress, as you can't very well take a break when it gets really busy without getting a talking to and thats what makes it the worse.

I have never had an anxiety attack. Not anything I can classify as one though.

I handle stress pretty well too. I'm not sure that people that have these attacks- don't handle it well. Could just be something that happens to them.

It's very important to try to be stress free and be able to control your stress.

I too worked in an ED and saw a number of people presenting with heart attack symptoms that were found later to be suffering from an anxiety attack. People really need to be more aware of the way stress can affect them and take steps to stay healthy during stressful times.
