Subject: 10 year old dies from dry drowning

He died an hour after he had come from swimming. I was not aware that this was any at all possible. It is the first time I am hearing about it, and I feel sad for the family.

Water isn't nearly as safe as people think, especially in the sumer months.

As with anything else, if the child manifests an unusual behavior, they should be watched carefully.

Another interesting note:

If you child seems to be suffering from some unknown ailment, be sure to advocate for them when talking to the doctor. Many doctors are not aware of newly recognized diagnoses, and many are not aware of dry drowning. They may tell you that nothing is wrong with your child.

Being insistent will pay off in the end!

Drowning is one of the things that scares me most as a parent. That, and choking. It just seems so, volatile. Even children who have had swimming lessons can drown. Even adult champion swimmers drown.

A friend lost her little girl to drowning. It happens so fast and kids are so crafty.

Very sad. I too had no idea about this.

I can imagine that this incident will really raise awareness.

Oh my Gosh that is so sad and scary. I just can not believe that is even possible. You would not think something like that could happen.

In my whole life I have never heard anything about dry drowning. I can hardly believe that the public hasn't been told about this long ago, especially since so many of the children who die from it had taken the water into their lungs after a bath!

Why aren't parents told about this when they have kids?

It's a terribly sad story, but since it is getting so much media attention, maybe other parents will know to get to a doctor if their child shows the symptoms after swimming or after a bath.

Parents are not told about this because it is one of many millions of rare events that could take the life of your child. If we were warned about all of them it would take a lifetime to learn about-and we would be in fear constantly.

I understand exactly what you mean but I am a mother of four and am already constantly living in fear and the only thing that makes it bearable is knowing what to look out for. If this was something that had been better publicized the change in the attitude of her son may have been enough for her to have saved his life.

I am thinking a number fo things.

One why was he at the pool alone?

Here and in all the places I lived anyone under the age of 18 had to be accompoanied by a parent in order to get in.

Another thing we have ot consider is the physiology, where was the cough gag reflex? This happens to prevent fluid from entering the lungs..

My sympathies with the parents, and really all teh aprenst and adults who have had people die from this.

It just goes to show that sometimes what we consider safe is not....

I read this story and it is sad anytime a child dies. It is a shame that this had to happen. It looks like this was just a case that just does not happen very often.

I agree. I definitely feel more informed that is for sure. I am just sorry it had to happen to that poor family for me to find out about it.

We ran into this on numerous occasions with an elderly woman I cared for and also my mother. We not only had fewer than prescribed pills but we on occasion received completely different meds as well.

The last time we caught it was almost laughable as we received liquid antibiotics when we were suppose to receive blood pressure pills. If it is not for me then I always try and double check that way I do not have to make an extra trip back to the pharmacy.

Sorry to hear but it happened here also two years back. When you take your kid to swim you should be very careful.
