My son gained 70 lbs while taking depakote. Now he's been off the depakote for two weeks and is on Seroquel XR which is unlikely to cause weight gain. How long does it take for the depakote to get out of his system and to hopefully start losing some weight? He's cut his eating and has started exercising.

That's great, it seems as if he is taking his situation seriously, it's really unfortunate though. Was weight gain listed as one of the side effects.

The weight loss will take time. Just as much time as it took to gain it will take to lose-probably with some more added in. Don't expect to see more than a pound a week.

Yes, one of the common side effects with depakote is a substantial weight gain. At the time that he was put on it, the benefits outweighed the risk but we didn't realize how much he would gain.
