Subject: | OTC Medicine past it's pull date | |
I found in my medicine cabinet an unopened bottle of infant tylenol suspension liquid. It's 6 months past it's expiration date. Is it still okay to use? |

Ya know...I wouldn't use it at all. I generally toss anything that's expired just because you just never know if maybe a chemical reaction takes place after so much time or whatever. Be on the safe side! |

I read that most drugs are still safe to take for a year past its expiration date, but that depends on the medication being stored properly in the right temperature and in a dry place. The chemicals don't change but the drug might be less powerful so you won't know what dosage you will really get if you take it. But safety first is always a good slogan to follow so it's best to get a new bottle of your medication if it's past the expiration date. Especially if it's for an infant. Also remember that many stores, including drug and food stores, were recently sited for selling things way after their expiration date, so always check the date on your purchases. |

I was told that the medication just loses its potency so I do not think it would be bad to use and if it was for me I'd use it but I automatically throw away all the things that are for the children. |

No I would not use it. You just cannot be too careful with things like that in my view, even if it is unopened. |

I have used drugs, like acetominaphen and ibuprophen, past the expiration date for myself. I don't know if I would use them on my child. Maybe only in that situation the the previous poster described. |

Call the number on the box/bottle. All companies can tell you whether their product is safe to use past the date and if its a sell by or use by date or labeled as use by but ok if unopened, etc. This is always a good thing to do if in doubt, as well as with good purchased from discount stores that clear excess merchandise for other stores. |

I would throw it out espescially when you are talking about kids. It is not worth the risk. |

If it were for me- I would take it. I think that most medicines just lose potency- so they might not last as long or work as good. Anything to do with my child- I make sure it's ok--- so because this is children's medicine- I would toss it and get a new bottle. |

I asked my doctor about this, and he told me it is not recommended. But he personally would not use anything out of date when it came to lung problems, such as inhalers and such. |
