Subject: | My pain pills are not working anymore | |
I take 100 mg of Ultram er. They are not working anymore for the pain. I don`t like vicodin cause they keep me awake. Now I have to find another pain med that works and doesn`t keep me awake or doped up all day. Anyone know of a good one that I can talk to my doctor about? |

It would really depend on what you are using it for. I don't like V. as it upsets my stomach even when I eat before hand, and it gives me the shakes bad. I would suggest talking to your doctor about different options since this is something really only a doctor could recommend 100%. |

The longer I take any medication the more of a tolerance I develop for it and it becomes less effective. This happens with pain meds, allergy meds and it has even happened with my blood pressure medication. Sometimes it helps to rotate medications but always consult your physician before trying this. |

I agree with lacy, sometimes we get immune to our medications that it isn't doing anything for us anymore. Before you take any other meds, ask your doctor first. |

I think that the body can get used to taking medication which can result in the medication not having the same effects anymore. I would simply go along to your doctor and discuss any alternatives with him/her. |

This commonly happens with people that take pain medications over a long duration of time. Have you ever tried any holistic methods of pain relief like mediation or acupuncture? If nothing else, they might help to at least take the edge off. |

I take them because I had back fusion surgery. I figured I needed to either up the dose or switch to another med. I see my doc in Spet. I`ll ask him what I should do. Thanks guys and gals. |

My sister is in severe pain everyday because of arthritis in both hips. Sometimes she feels like the medication isn't working but if she forgets to take a dose the pain is much worse. There are many pain medications out there. Talk to your doctor about your pain. You do not have to live with pain in this day and age. |

I agree that it's possible to build up a resistance to certain meds to the point that they become ineffective. You might research your specific problems to see what meds are out there, or just ask your doctor who, no doubt, has several options available. |

Yeah to avoid building an extreme tolerance to any one medication your Doctor should be switching you between a few different prescriptions. |

We dont get immune we get resistant . we have built up a tolerance to its effectivness. Ultram Pain Reliever By: Peter F. Ullrich, Jr., MD Ultram is a type of narcotic-like oral pain reliever that is often prescribed to treat low back pain. Ultram, also known as tramadol, was approved by the FDA in 1998 and acts centrally (in the brain) to modulate the sensation of pain. It is not an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) nor does it have the anti-inflammatory effect of an NSAID. Its mechanism of action is similar to acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol), but Ultram is a stronger pain reliever than acetaminophen and has a weak narcotic effect. While Ultram is technically a narcotic or opioid pain medication, it is different from typical narcotics in that patients do not build up a tolerance with extended usage and there is a very low incidence of addiction. With other narcotics there is a general tendency to escalate the dosage of the medicine with time and a chance of addiction. The narcotic effect of Ultram is not as strong as the narcotic agents in other common pain medications, such as Vicodin (hydrocodone) and Oxycontin and Percocet (Oxycodone). As placed on the net for consumer information. However your pain may have changed. Often where we think pain is is not teh root cause. For example. of you ahvecarpal tunnel and all teh carpal tunnel medications and methods didnt work, we have to look at a different place, Say the neck. when a medication stops working then its SOP to look at other places where the problem may actually be coming from. in many cases its often spilan related or disk and vertebrate compression degeneration ealted when pain meds stop working. Coinsider a new neurologist to locate the pain center. tryiong OTC like Tylenol with dipenhydramine may work differently than Ultram which is the Tylenol family for pain relief. Or perhaps Excedrin which is an antinflammatory. J |
