Subject: Legalizing Marijuana

I saw on the news the other night that many California residents are pushing to get marijuana legalized. One of the main reasons they gave was because the taxes from it would help with the state's current financial problems.

I guess Arnold is ignoring this plea, but a poll shown on the news said 56% percent of California's population is for it.

I think it will be legalized eventually. The problem isn't so much that marijuana is evil of itself. It has been used to introduce people to harder stuff and there is so much crime associated with it. I suspect that if it is legalized these big negatives will slowly disappear.

I don't know if legalizing it will take away the bad 'novelty' of it, or just desensitize people who have always wanted to try but afraid the break the law. Is there an arrangement in place to ensure that the taxes are properly accounted for, reported and paid over once it is legalized?

If people were able to purchase this legal, less people would be arrested for (minor) reasons and end up being able to avoid "sneaking" using this for good reasons (not just run of the mill, I want to get a little messed up).

I think one good thing that could come out of legalizing it is that drug dealers could no longer profit off of it. I know the dealers would still have their harder drugs to turn to, but I think that's a whole different ball game and legalizing might take the edge off their "business."

I don't know how thoroughly the whole tax thing has been worked out for this possibility occurring in California, but it seems like they like to be the guinea pig for stuff like this, so maybe they can get it hashed out before it works its way to my state.

Anyone else find it funny you said "hashed out" in regards to this topic? :)

Really though, the taxes used for this could go for so much more if really needed, instead of some idiots pocket, and its helping people. I am all for it.

There are problems with this-its not a totally innocuous drug. It can cause mental health issues down the line, increase your risks of depression amongst other things.

I am still for it being legal, but I think people should be fully aware of the risks.

LOL re the "hashed out" thing. I didn't even do it on purpose.

I agree with you Dogget, as far as people being aware of the risks. Heck, there should be a drug ed class for kids in junior high and again in high school anyway for this stuff.

I wonder how it is in places like Amsterdam (is there any other place like Amsterdam?) as far as having legalized drugs.

Let me get this straight. We are constantly hearing on TV and the news about the dangers of cigarette smoking. Now we want to legalize marijuana to damage lungs even further because it will increase tax revenue. Why don't we as a nation just learn to live within our means. It makes more sense to me to say we want to legalize it for its medicinal purposes than to say do it for the money. Isn't that why drug dealers sell it?

Legalize it because it is no more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol. I have long been an advocate for legal marijuana use. The statistics of it being a so-called gateway drug have been proven to be false many times over. That term was used by anti-marijuana proponents and is completely bogus. Obviously, the laws governing driving, etc, while under the influence should apply but as to dangers...I've seen plenty of belligerent, violent drunks but I've never seen a violent pothead.

One point to consider it is that having it be illegal doesn't stop people from using it. It just creates a way for not so nice people to profit off it without paying ANY taxes. So, I don't see it would create any harm to legalize it, but it could create some good.

I think legalizing Marijuana would be the right thing to do. The funny thing is that once stuff like that becomes legal, crime and addictions actually go down. But yeah, the financial aspect would be a huge boon too.
