Do we have any past ciggie smokers here? How did you end up quitting? Right now I am the therapy for a friend that is quitting. I am not sure what to really tell them besides look online. Thanks!

I quit, went cold turkey after twelve years on a two to three pack a day habit. I had a health scare that was smoking related and believe me it was motivation enough to stop! I had no problems, and no regression, no nicotine support patches or anything like that.

I haven't been able to quit yet but am trying. One thing that has helped me to cut down considerably is to distance smoking from the events that I used to associate it with. For instance, I used to get up and have a cigarette first thing. Now I wait an hour or two before lighting up and I don't cough in the morning like I used to. Do the same with eating or just before bed - any time that you automatically reach for a butt. Now that I have disassociated smoking with these, I think it will be easier to quit as I have eliminated many of the psychological triggers.

I think that disassociation is a great way to start and I have heard others talk about it before. The price for the patches and everything else is just as bad as buying another carton so why waste more money if you can quit on your own.

Thanks for all the tips so far all! My buddy is worried that the patch or anything else might be too expensive since its not something covered by their work insurance. The good news though is that the work wants a no smoke zone and is working to try and fix that so I will keep you posted with how it turns out.

I don't know how true this is but my mother swore that it helped her. The American Lung Association put out some quit smoking tips and said cinnamon helps to control cravings so cinnamon candies or gums can help. Good luck because quitting is hard to do. Most people have to keep trying for a while so don't beat yourself up if you slip up - just keep trying. It took my mother a year but she's been smoke-free for twenty years now.

I may have to try that or something similar. My teeth are quite sensitive and I seldom eat anything sweet. I know they have the commit candies too but I know those are too sweet.
