If you cannot get your normal dose for a time, but can find the half strength, is there anything stopping you from taking two of the smaller ones?

It depends on the medication and you should always check with the pharmacist before doing this. Most things should be fine but occasionally the pills could be formulated differently or get into your system at different speeds which could cause issues.

Cranberry's right. The answer really does depend on which medication you're talking about.

I am always very careful about what medication I take and how I take it. If I could not get my usual form of medication I would ask the pharmacist when I buy it. Our local pharmacy is very helpful in that department.

I have had to do this with pain pills before when I was hurt at work and the pills made me nauseas. I did check with the pharmacist and my doctor before hand though.

So there is not really any way that you would know without asking a pharmacist? Can you not compare ingredients, and if the ingredients are the same (but half the amount) consider it safe? Is there something hidden, that we wouldn't know?
