Subject: Do you talk to your kids about drug abuse? Even OTCs

I have heard stories from both my boys about their friends taking the parents drugs and using them for fun. Some kids have died from this. I keep all our meds locked up even the PTC drugs. These teens will take anything they can find to get high. I have a very open relationship with my boys so they are not afraid to talk to me about drugs at all.

It might depend on the childs age before you sit down and have that talk with them. Depending of course on how in depth you want to go too.

We have very open and frank talks on the subject whenever it comes up and we discuss it as in depth as we think they are capable of understanding. I want to make sure they have a good understanding of the issue and the dangerous consequences abusers face.

My children are a bit too young to be discussing drug abuse with yet. So far we just talk about how they are only to take medicine when mommy or daddy give it to them, and never to take medicine from anyone else except a doctor or nurse in the hospital. We talk about how medicine is good when we are sick, but if we take too much or the wrong kind it can hurt our body. I think this is planting the seeds for discussions in the future.

Thats very smart on your part Patty. The younger ones don`t need to hear too explicitly about it. Just on their level. It`s good to start them learning young.

I will not lock my medicines up from my teenage children. This is just not appropiate behavior in my opinion. Children have to learn that their parents trust them, and it is our responsibility to teach them properly to where we don't have to take such extreme measures. I think a teen should be responsible enough to leave medicine around and them not abuse it. If they do then they need to be punished.

I do talk to my daughter about drug/alcohol use and the negative impacts it has. I keep it age-appropriate (she is 8 and so far all we have discussed is alcohol and tobacco). As she gets older, we will discuss more dugs, including OTC.

Yes, I talk to my kids about it as they need to know about it so they do not fall prey to it.

Well some teens are not responsible and will do what their friends do. Personally I am not taking that chance. The inappropriate behavior is the teens stealing the drugs to get high. There are a lot of parents that think they know their teen and it turns out that they didn`t and its too late. My sons lost a friend because of that reason.

I've always talked to my kids about taking medicines. Since they are highly sweetened and flavored its an issue for younger kids wanting to eat them like candy and older kids finding ways to use them as a quick and cheap high. I don't lock them up but they are on a higher shelf where they aren't easy to get to.
