Subject: What causes feet and legs to swell?

I frequently have this problem in the summertime. My feet and legs will swell even if I am sitting at home. It tends to happen more often when I have been sitting at my desk for long periods of time. Could this be due to poor circulation while sitting for a few hours at a time?

Alot of times it is retained water. I know my mom has this issue when she eats white flour although not sure how it relates. I know if she has even a roll with dinner her ankles especially swell the next day.

Lots of things can either the heat or water retention can, pregnancy or bad circulation can also do it, I think you need to go and get checked out to see what is causing it.

That happens to me every single summer. I have asked my doctor about it numerous times and he says that it is normal for feet and ankles to swell during the summer when you are sitting or standing in the same position for a long time.

He suggests that I make sure to keep my feet raised when I am sitting at my computer, even if I can just put a couple of books down and rest my feet on them.

I also keep my legs raised as far up as I can when I am sitting down by using an ottoman I bought just for this reason.

I also take breaks at least once an hour where I walk around for a while to get my legs moving.

And as usual I don't eat salt and I try and drink a lot of water, since the better hydrated you are the more the body will give up excess water.

I have the same problem during hot weather, but it comes in my hands as well. So much so that I cannot wear my wedding ring. I always thought it was due to both circulation and water retention, as I do have both.

One of the big things that causes my arms and legs to swell is an excess amount of sodium. As soon as I eat a Chinese food meal I can feel myself blowing up - it is especially worse in the hotter, summer months.

I'm sure the fact that I don't drink nearly as much water as I should contributes to this as well. In the past I have had problems with my hands swelling and not being able to wear my rings. But, in the last couple of years it has always been my feet and legs.
