Subject: Tooth Disease

My mother in law has been battling an infection in the gum for ten months. She followed the instructions of her dentist and it didn't help a bit. He's irrigated it with peroxide, poked it. They think it was a cyst but the dentist left it too long-she has wonderful dental health, really looks after herself.

Anyway, left too long then infection ate the bone away. She was at risk of a broken jaw and the tooth basically fell out when the periodontist tugged it as there was nothing holding it. She had to have a bone graft.

Anyway-how angry do you think she has the right to be right now?

I guess a lot would depend upon how long the dentist messed around with it before sending her to the periodontist. Treating it as a cyst would be the natural thing to do but at the first sign of trouble she should have been sent on.

I think she has every right to be angry with her dentist. I agree that she should have been refered to a periodontist much sooner. Has she put in a complaint to the dentist in question?

That poor lady! She has every right to be angry and to look into seeing if she can get some justice because of her dentist's lack of caring about her health.

I guess all she can do now is follow this new doctor's directions and try to keep herself as healthy on the whole as possible so her body can fight the infection.

I do not understand why dentists feel the need to try and treat things like this instead of referring to a specalist. This is just dangerous and very arrogant on their part.

What's worse is that an unhealed mouth sore can actually be cancerous and if that had been the case then her own dentist leaving it risked letting it grow and severely compromise her health. I hope she's doing better now.
