Subject: | Stroke prevention | |
I suffered a pretty significant stroke a couple of years ago, and have had a couple of clot scares since then. I am now on a blood thinner, don't do other drugs or smoke, and barely drink. Is there anything else that y'all are aware of that may help decrease the likelihood of having another? (P.S. I am also the proper weight, eat well, and have good blood pressure and cholesterol. Boringly good, I know, but I'm being proactive...which explains why I ask this question.) |

I think I've heard that some doctors suggest patients take an aspirin a day. I assume that serves to thin the blood? What kind of blood thinner are you taking, jazzy? |

It sounds like you are doing everything in your power to manage your condition. You mentioned not taking other drugs, but I hope this extends to herbal remedies too. I wouldn't take aspirin on top of a prescribed blood thinner without the direction of my doctor. |

Doctors want people to think that if you eat well, exercise, don't smoke or drink, maintain the proper weight, that you will live forever and nothing bad will happen to you. It just isn't true. A stroke, heart attack, cancer, anything might get to you no matter how healthy you are. You seem to be doing what you're supposed to be doing. Do strokes run in your family? Maybe it's genetic. The best thing for you is to keep doing what you're doing and talk to your doctor. |

Kara is right, this is why people always have the old wives tale of carry aspirin with you (or Bayer). I don't think I would double it up either, the Rx they gave you could be stronger than the aspirin anyways. |
