Subject: Shingles

My dad got shingles late last year and they lasted for months. I was told they were like adult chicken pox but when he sent me a picture of his face it looked like he had skidded across asphalt on one side of his face. It was definitely not what I expected to see. He says that I should get a vaccine for it and I'm really thinking about it. Has anyone had the vaccine? Does it work?

My husband had Shingles years ago and was miserable. He had them around his waist and chest area. I've also heard that you can be vacinated for Shingles but neither of us has been. I think it would be a good thing to do. I know a woman who has Shingles all the time and they can't seem to get rid of hers.

That's something, when I had the chicken pox in my early twenties, I was told it could be shingles, I researched it on the net and came away with the conclusion that shingles was something that could kill you.

My mom had an immune deficiency and she ended up with shingles. My daughter at that time had chicken pox and that is how she got them. I was informed that shingles is the adult form of chicken pox if the adult had previously had chicken pox. Anyone else heard that?

Only recently did a vaccine come out for shingles. I read that if you had chicken pox earlier on in life then something from it remains in your body that can erupt as shingles later on in life. The article also said that there is a rather large percentage of people in the population that will get it as the population gets older.

It is supposed to be the most painful condition there is!

Maybe we all should look into getting the vaccine?

I had the chicken pox at age 7 and then again at the age of 30. (see article in topics called chicken pox)

The second episode was indeed chicken pox and not shingles. It has been 22 years since I had them and have not come down with a case of shingles to date. That could change though, one never knows. I have heard that stress is also affiliated with shingles, so I try to keep myself stress free, which is extremely hard in these days and times. Not doing so well on it!! I find myself letting calgon take me away 3 or 4 times a week. HaHa

I have chronic shingles of the head and face. I contracted it when i was 36 and havce never gotten rid of it. Some peopel with compromised systems, liek me, i have type 1 diabetes, never get rid of them. Andteh higher teh tress the worse theoutbreak or chronic active rash.

Shingles is teh exact same virus as chciken pox. hwoever when it goes into remission it settle sin eth nerve and stress, illness or other problem will reactivate it.

I hope your father does nto develope hunt ramsay syndrom. which is something i am pryaing i dont develop. Its worse on teh face. But aveeno anti itch cream works wonders.

I highy recommend that anyone who has the ability to get a shingles vax get one.

The younger you are when youget an outbreak the more it will last alifetime, where older people its limited or at least intermittent.

Zovirax or any anitiviral for herpes works well to break teh cycle, but becomes ineffective after three or four rounds on the med.

Anti anxiety drug to keep calm, limited stress and a good soothing wash is teh best treatments after antivirals dont work.....
