Subject: Satisfying a Sweet Tooth in a Diabetic

I have a family member recently diagnosed with Diabetes. He is a big dessert eater and his wife (mother and father in-law) has said that he will not give up his dessert. She has found a couple of low/no sugar recipes but is looking for more of them or maybe some store products she can get. He has tried sugar-free candy but because of how much he ate he spent a good deal of time in the bathroom. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

I have a family member with the exact same problem. He seems to really get into the sugar free ice cream. Other than that, his wife tries to make him all the normal sweets he used to eat minus the bad ingrediants and substitutes sugar with splenda.

Would a smoothie (with banana, strawberries etc) or frozen smoothie help? There are times when I just have to get something sweet in my diet, it doesn't happen very often though.

You can replace the sugar with something like Sweet and Low I believe. There are some great tasting desserts made out there using sugar substitutes.

Thanks for all of the information. I've been reading a bit on sugar substitutes and I don't like what I'm seeing for the most part. I think a smoothie wouldn't be bad as long as you use low fat milk instead of fruit juice. I was amazed at the amount of sugar in juices.

It is definitely a matter of watching your sugar intake and making the sacrifices. If it were for weight loss I don't think it would be that big of deal but diabetes is nothing to mess with. Hopefully he'll get the point soon.

Thanks again.

Chris
