Subject: Reversing alcohol damage to the liver

I have read that the liver is naturally regenerative and that over a bit of time any damage incurred by earlier alcohol usage can be reversed. Is this fact or fiction? Any info?

I can't imagine much deep damage can be reversed. Everything in your body regenerates but if the original is so flawed the new copy can't hope to be perfect as it once was. Kind of like why scars fade but don't completely disappear over the years.

The liver has a tremendous capacity to regenerate itself. If caught early, minimal liver damage can be reversed if the person abstains from alcohol. More severe damage causes illness and sometimes death.

I have learned about this recently from a friend of mine. It seems that if there are long times between drinking, it will take time to revert back but we never found out exactly how much time is needed. I would love to know.

I agree that I don't know how much of the damage done can be reversed as it is not a case where surgery can be performed inside the liver to patch or fix whatever has gone wrong, but I am sure things can be done to slow the rapid degeneration.

I was in a car accident in Jan 2001 where I was riding in the back passenger seat of an old CJ7 Jeep.

I was thrown out and the Jeep landed on top of me crushing my gallbladder and lacerating a quarter of my liver.

It took me a while to recover (1 year) and my liver fully regenerated itself; like a lizard tale.

The human body is amazing how it works and repairs itself and a little prayer doesn't hurt either ;)

The liver is the only organ in the human body that can regenerate. Even it, though, has its limits.

If you are drinking enough to worry about reversing damage to your liver, you are probably drinking too much. Also, overeating fatty foods and heavily processed food can damage the liver. As can several genetic disorders.

Not just liver but almost all internal organs regenerate if they are well taken cared off. The lungs will heal itself if smoking damaged it. The intestines will heal itself if acidity made a hole in them. The bones regrow or reattach itself if its broken. But healing doesn't take overnight, it takes very long time to heal themselves and they won't come back to their original state. Well at least its healed.
