Subject: Retinal Detachment

An almost blind friend just had surgery yesterday to try an re-attached a detached retinal, saving the small amount of sight that he has. As part of the procedure they fill the eye with oil and no one told him whether this will be absorbed by the body or if he will have to go and have it drained.

Anyone had this done, could perhaps answer?

I have never even heard of this let alone know someone that has had it done. I really do not think they would not have a plan for this oil though, that would be horrendous if that were the case.

I would think that the oil has to be drained because it is silicon based from what I know, and that cannot be absorbed. Perhaps it drains from the eye in the way that the normal fluid does, but that would mean leaving silicon oil in the body and I just don't see that happening.

Are you sure something like this was not gone over before the surgery and maybe the friend just forget? This seems like one of the things that would be talked about beforehand.

I knew a guy when I was in college who took a spike in the face during a volleyball match. Suffered a partially detached retina. They fixed him up just fine. Hope that offers some encouragement.
