Subject: Oppositional Defiance Disorder

My son has been diagnosed with this and I'm a tad unsure how to handle it along with his other issues. There isn't any medications that help, I was told, but behavior modification therapies can. The problem is I can't find any site by searching to figure out exactly what behavior modification therapy is and how I do it.

How old is he? I swear, my 3 year old has this. ;)

Have you seen a behavioral pediatrician? They should be able to hook you up with occupational therapy.

This site looks as if it has a lot of suggestions that might be able to help you.

But it would be worth your while to see if there is one place that might give you the answers you need. It might take some time but it's worth the time spent.

I've never heard of Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Maybe if you tell me exactly what it is, I'd be able to help you with finding more about it out. It seems like it'd be something like ADHD, a hyper disorder. Hmm, tell me.

skatss - thanks for that site. It looks like it might be a good start for me to learn more.

K to the J - I'm not fully sure what it is myself. It seems that he has some compulsion to do what he's not supposed to do. I'm not talking normal rebellion, either, but much more than the average child - even with dumb little things that wouldn't matter.

I haven't seen any "behavior modification therapies" that were much more than organized discipline with this disorder, and I have seen a lot of it as I work with special needs students.

You may need to harden your heart a bit to change his behavior, which is often the hardest thing for mothers to do.

You can try using point sheets, the marble game, and other tools used in group homes and in special needs classrooms, when your son is at home with you. Definitely look through the URL given in a previous response.

There may be medications that will help him out. You will need to weigh their benefits, like preventing him from ruining his own life along with yours...against the advise of others who would have you avoid medications.

You need to be trained to properly do behavioral modification therapies. Are there any centers in your area that specialize in autistic behavior or ADD? They can probably help you as well.

What do you think?
