Subject: | Ocular Migraine | |
I have been suffering from ocular migraines for the past 10 years and despite my best efforts, I have been unable to determine the trigger for these headaches. Does anyone else experience ocular migraine and actually know what causes them? |

I do. the explenation actually comes from the IRLEN syndrom site. Its an over excitment of teh optic nerves. Too much information is being pricessed faster than teh nerve canm handle. It depends on a whole list of things, but simply put its just over aggitation of teh ocular nerve. Wearing tinted glasses helps allot. YOu just ahve to find teh right shade to reduce the effct. PLus you get ncie glasses out of it. j |

I have migraines several times a year, but have never had them diagnosed as ocular. When I get this way, I have to lie down with the lights off and take about 4 Excedrin Migraine pills to get rid of it. Once I had one many years ago, when I was on a birth control pill that was too strong for me, I honestly thought I was going to die right then. |

My migraines always have to do with my eyesight. I start with a slight nauseous headache and I either have a small blind spot that grows bigger and bigger as time passes and it ends with my not being able to see at all or I get a small area with shimmering lights and zigzag flashing lights that also spreads over the full eyesight and that ends with my not being able to see at all either. Then the pain starts and I am laid low for hours. I have found that a few things can set it off. Bright natural light can do it, hot weather, reading too much for days before sometimes sets it off and sometimes certain foods can start the pain. I usually go into what I call migraine mode and warn my household. I take as strong a painkiller as I have in the house. My bedroom is prepared, darkened and I try to get it as cool as possible. I pile up the blankets so my body will be warm while my head is cool. Then I fill my kitchen sink with hot water and submerge my arms into the hot water trying to get blood to fill it and that is supposed to get blood from the head that makes the pain. That sometimes heads off the migraine and I don't get it as powerfully as usual. When that doesn't work then it's into bed and by then the full nausea and pain hits and I am out of it until the pain level goes down. It took me years to figure out what to do to make the pain as bearable as possible. |
