Subject: Migraines

Hello All,

I'm interested in finding a good solution to my migraines.

When I've gone to doctors (numerous at this point), I've had all sorts of tests and when nothing could be found "wrong" I was referred to psychiatric meds like Prozac. I'm not interested in any sort of anti-depressant as I'm not depressed.

I've also been to many alternative docs who've told me I have everything wrong from yeast infections to body toxins. I've done numerous cleanses, taken herbs, tried aromatherapy, etc, etc, ad nauseum to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions I may not have heard of? I don't want to use any drugs that are to heavy, but I do want something effective.

Thanks!

Well, I can't seems to remember any of the stuff that you already haven't tried. I would suggested various herbal supplements, but I see you already tried that. Have you tried Gingko Biloba?

Wow, it sounds as if you've tried nearly everything I can think of. I was going to just mention(and this is not an ultimate solution but it helps) that they make some adhesive patches which you can put on your forehead when you are having a migraine. They feel very cold on your head and have given me a lot of help in the past.

I find that sometimes all that really helps is a dark room, and sleep. I hope that you find some relief very soon.

Have you tried removing items from your diet and then reintroducing them. Some migraines are triggered by certain foods. I'm not an expert but keeping track of what you are eating and when you are getting migraines in a sort of diary might help you pinpoint some food or family of foods that cause this.

An elimination diet is a great idea as picodoll mentioned! I have read that caffeine heavy foods can bring on migraines. Alcohol is another trigger, especially red wine I believe.

Elimination diets are kind of a pain but it might reveal some answers.

Hey picodoll and jadep! Thanks for the suggestion. I have in fact tried the food elimination idea including food diary. Either I was really lousy at it :) or it's not a food thing.

But I do appreciate the suggestion and open to hear about any more.

Right now, I'm trying the HCG diet (check out my blog on how it's going at www.hcgblog.wordpress.com ) both to lose weight and to see if that will help any.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Headaches are sometimes difficult to treat as they can be caused by so many factors. My son has had migranes for years. They put him on a couple different allergy meds with no avail. They finally put him on Topomax, 50 mg. 2 times a day. This isn't quite strong enough so he is also on Midran for the breakthrough headaches. I just wish they could find out what was wrong and fix it, instead of just pumping him with more meds.

My mother has occasional migraines, and the pain gets very strong, doctors can't seems to figure out what is causing them. She tried various therapies to relief the pain.

I don't get it. You wouldn't think something that has plagued man for so long would have no real solution. I guess it's right up there with the common cold. Although I'd rather have a cold than a migraine any day of the week.

I used to have terrible migraine headaches that lasted days and sometimes weeks at a time. I decided to track exactly what triggered off these headaches. Eventually I concluded that stress, cheddar cheese, oranges and milk based products set off my headache, so I avoid those as much as possible.
