Can someone tell me how a person gets meningitis?

My cousins young daughter has been hospitalized with meningitis and is in ICU and I just don't understand how she ended up with this horrible condition.

Does she have viral or bacterial meningitis? I know the viral kind is extremely contagious and is passed from person to person. Bacterial can come from an infection like an ear infection or sinusitis. Hope the girl is recovering. I know meningitis can be extremely serious.

I do not know. I will have to find that out from my mom. I have been trying to avoid asking her parents too much because I know they are there with her day and night and I don't want to add to their obvious frustrations.

I honestly did not even realize that there were two different kinds. I am definitely glad that I asked.

Well let us know when you find out. From what I have read about meningitis it is a very dangerous thing to have and very difficult to overcome. I will keep your family member in my thoughts and pray for a positive outcome.

How often could this happen to someone that always has sinus issues? It seems more and more people are dealing with sinusitis these days that I remember growing up in younger years.
