Has anyone participated in something like this either as the person needing the help or one who was there to give it? I have a friend who I think might need one.

No, not personally. All I would say is if you are planning on staging one, to really make sure you have all your ducks in a row first. If it fails, future attempts will be far harder.

I have never done a real intervention but I recommend that you get as many people together as you can to do it. It would be better to have professional guidance of some kind.
