Subject: Heart Murmurs

Is this something you can grow out of? I have been told by my doctor that during extreme dental work or any surgery I also need an IV to control something, not quite sure what so I will be checking later this month when I visit again. Just thought I would check to see if anyone out there had the same issues as me. :)

I'm not sure if you can outgrow a murmur, but I guess it would depend on whether the issues can be fixed with exercise and growth. I also imagine it would depend on how bad the murmur is. I have a slight one but it normally isn't noticeable or an issue.

Yes, many children diagnosed with heart murmurs at a young age outgrow them. Adults do not. During dental work, tattooing, and surgery you need to have a dose of antibiotics to protect from a serious heart infection, called endocarditis.

As long as your doctor knows about it and has told you that all you need to do is take antibiotics during medical procedures, then you really don't need to be concerned.

Young children and pregnant women can "grow out" of murmurs, but adults usually have then for life.

As long as you keep it in mind and follow your doctor's advice, then you won't be harmed by it.

You should find out from your doctor exactly what needs to be done before any dental work, in detail. I bet he has a list that can be printed for you, making things simpler.

That way you save time explaining things to the dentist.

I know my mother had one but she was also told about it later in life (well past her 20's), mine was during my mid 20's and I haven't had any issues. I can still run and exercise w/o like falling down in pain, but I just wondered since I am getting tons of mixed reviews all over the web about it.

I will be going in before the end of summer for dental work and need that info, I know the doctor told me but i think I lost the notes during a move.
