Subject: Exercises for a bad back?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this. I have a bad back. I can hurt it by doing things you wouldn't expect. One time I was brushing my hair and when I set the brush down, I started having spasms. I hurt it on Monday by exercising. I started having spasms that evening.

Does anyone know of any type of exercise that is good to strengthen it?

I can go for months without having a problem and then wham, it gets me.

There are a lot of different exercises you can do for your back. The thing you have to do first though is to check with your doctor to make sure it will be OK for you to try some strengthening exercises. He/she may prescribe physical therapy. In my experience the best exercises are done with strengthening the muscles that help support the back. I'm giving you this link below for some exercises but as I said before-check with your doctor first. You may have a condition that won't allow you to do any exercising at all. I'm not a doctor and I really can't give you any advice but this site has a lot of nice information:

Good luck and I hope the back pain gets better.

Thanks for the link and the advice Ella. Jill isn't the only one here with a bad back. I have actually begun having back spasms once standing properly and not moving. It can be very frustrating not knowing when trouble will strike.

There are different exercises your doctor might recommend based on the type of back pain. I've had a lot of lower back trouble and one of the most helpful ones which was given to me is to sit in a straight backed chair and lean forward, touching hands to ground. Another one is laying on your back, arms crossed on chest, and lifting the butt up in the air. These both help to strengthen the back, and as my doctor tells me when the back is stronger the pain is better able to be handled.

I appreciate the link too. My doctor has give me exercises before that seem to help but I think I could be doing more. I have a lot of back pain due to arthritis and have a very hard time sometimes with pain.

I have a lot of middle and lower back issues. I wanted to mention for those who might be able that a pool can work wonders for your back. When my back flares up, I can tell a big difference by just getting in the pool for a while and doing some mild exercises. It works wonders.
