Subject: Curious rash

My baby developed a curious rash after a one day fever. It is raised, and hot to the touch and splotchy. I was thinking roseola, but he doesn't quite fit all the symptoms. The doctor says it's a viral rash... can I do anything for him? He's quite fussy.

Viruses need to run their course on their own in order to build up immunity. Perhaps you can give him a bit of Tylenol to ease some of his discomfort.

I agree that comfort is about the only thing that you do for him now. I am not sure that I agree with all these diseases now just being labelled as viral rash, but really there isn't much you can do for any of them, so just try and ease the discomfort.

Thanks. I didn't give him anything, except a bath with baking soda a couple times, which seemed to soothe him. It passed in 2 days, so it wasn't bad at all.

Though I wasn't happy with the whole "it's just a viral rash" thing. But the alternative meant a bunch of tests, so I accepted the dx.

I know how you feel about everything being played off as "viral". I accept te doctors input and make sure to keep a close eye. My doctor always tells me if it doesn't go away in x amount of time or gets worse to call her, so that's what I do. Most of the time things go away on their own relatively quickly and I don't have to follow-up with her.

When in doubt always put a phone call into your doctor.

I know many mothers don't want to seem over worried or over protective, but you pay the doctor for his knowledge and so if you have a question always call him to ask about it.

Call your doctor and ask before you give your child any drugs to take.

Might be contact dermatitis, which would require some sort of intervention from a physician in order to get it under control. Watch the rash over the next few days and see what happens, if in doubt, call the doctor.
