Subject: | Covering The Head? | |
Now that my sister is losing her hair to chemotherapy, she and I have been talking to other women who in different stages of losing their hair. It seems that most of them are taking a bit of a strong woman outlook and tell us that they don't like to wear any wigs or to even wear hats or kerchiefs to cover their lack of hair. A few women have even told us that they tell people that they hate to cover their bare heads and that they will only cover up if it makes other people terribly uncomfortable to see them without hair. They word it so that other people usually tell them to not cover up if they don't want to. My sister gets very hot with this summer heat and she still isn't comfortable wearing the wig. Should she just forget about covering up the small amount of hair she has left, unless someone complains? She feels as bad about being bald as she does about getting all hot and sweaty when wearing a wig or hat in this heat. How would you feel if cancer patients just went around with their heads uncovered? She wants to know how healthy people feel about it. |

I think that is her right and if someone ever complained about something like that in front of me I think I'd have to inflict some serious bodily harm because that is not their call and it would be quite rude. Personally I think it takes a strong person to forget the wigs and that is exactly what I would think of someone who I saw walking around in various stages of hair loss. |

I think it really is up to her and how she feels about it. I would not worry about what others think. |

Personally I would not have a problem with it. My dad lost his hair with cancer treatment and he looked good. I suppose you should try not to be influenced by what others think, easier sald than done I know. |

Look we have to be reasonable here, some people just do look a little funny with bald heads. If its from cancer or by choice of a shaven head. I still don't think thats any reason someone should cover up to make another person feel more comfy. They need to suck it up and move forward, knowing that there are not other people in the world only to pacify them. Mean a littte? Yep, but you know I could never cover up if it were me just for the sake of someone else not liking it. |

I totally agree with Marley. Despite how others may see her, she should do what makes her most comfortable. If that is covering her head to hide her baldness, then do that. If it is showing her bald head in all it's glory, then that is what she should do. |

Thanks everybody for your opinion. I showed this to my sister and she got a bit teary eyed but happy to know that people are willing to be open minded. She is also happy that no one here has said that she should cover up because they would not like to see a person who is sick. She has chemotherapy day after tomorrow and it will be the first time that she is going out with so much of her hair gone. She hasn't decided what to do yet, but she thanks you all for your input. I thank you too. |

If I were bald initially, I would cover my head with hat. It is not easy to go around bald if you are not bald before. Imagine your love one who is bald suddenly. I'm sure you will make some remarks over it which will make him/her feel more pressure by exposing his/her bald head. |
