Subject: | Collapsed Lung Following Biopsy | |
A family member had a biopsy done of a nodule on his lung and they ended up putting a hole in it and collapsing it. Last time they missed the nodule. Its grown since then and they got a piece. What can happen with the hole though? |

I would imagine that it will heal in time and not pose further problems. People have pieces of lung removed all the time, and have holes deliberately poked in them to have collapsed lungs re-inflated. They heal in time. |

The hole will heal in time and people have also had parts of their lungs removed because of disease and they heal up as well. It is also possible to get a piece of the nodule without necessarily putting a hole in the lung. Chris |

The hole wille ventualklyheal. IN lung surgery though when they remove part of the lobectomy they often suture pieces together and use dacron to act as a layer. IN a hole however a clot can forma nd become a small problem. Even in a pneumothorax they ahve to monitor to make sure of no clots that form. getting teh nodule in pieces now thats a different story. I hate to be a doomsayer but it seems as though whoever the dopctor was, either was aghost doctor( one who operates for another) or was a very bad surgeon. I woudl seek teh advice of an attorney in this case because that is bordering on malpractice just my opinion though julie |

The nodule is 1.5mm wide, hardly something thats easy to get a piece of and was only 1mm the last attempt. The procedure is done while checking on a cat scan for placement. hardly done by an intern if you get my drift. Nothing malpractice about it. Simply the fact thats there is only so much room to move while hunting a tiny spec. And the gentleman involved is 5'11" and 130lbs so he's tiny in frame besides. He's got a checkup scheduled next week about the time the labwork will be back to check on his lung. |
