Subject: Broken Toe

I think I've broken my toe. It's purple and black and hurts like crazy and is kind of icky looking.

Is there any point going to the hospital? Can they do anything or is it just a case of letting it mend?

I really don't know that they do a lot, I mean it's not like they splint toes I don't think. But you might want to get it checked to make sure that its set properly, so that it doesn't heal all crooked.

Try and keep off it if you can, and if you cannot keep off it then make sure you are wearing a good, really supportive pair of shoes. It will help to stop it hurting.

I saw an episode of House where bone marrow leaked out of a broken toe and caused an embolism! Ok, I know, its not typical stuff but I guess I'm saying that it should be checked out just in case and not just ignored.

They cannot splint the toes but they can make sure that it is as straight as possible and the the bone didn't do any damage to the surrounding tissues. It's smarter to get it checked out.

They can also prescribe you a pain killer if its really bothering you! I really think it's wise to get checked out just in case-did you go in?

I went in yes. It's broken and yes, there was nothing they could do. I got x-rayed to make sure the rest of my foot was ok because of how much bruising there was.

Otherwise I'm home and hobbling.

I feel your pain. Couple years ago my wife left the vacuum cleaner out before going to bed. Had to go to the bathroom during the night and nailed it. Turned purple. Was not actually broken but it was partially dislocated. Chiropractor put it back it place. Whole clinic heard it pop back in place.

Oh just lovely! That sounds like you really appreciated your dear wife's hard work that particular night!

I hope it healed pretty fast!

Was it a big toe or a little toe? I have broken the littlest of toes before and never went but I was also young and dumb as I call it. Not like it fell off or anything but if you can stay off it and it doesn't bother you I think it would be ok.

I broke my big toe once at least that's what the doctor told me when he x-rayed my foot checking for a foot fracture. I healed fracture showed on my toe and the doctor asked when I broke it. I told him it was one of a hundred times I've banged up my big toe. That was first I knew it had ever been broken.

Mine was the middle toe. My wife felt awful about it. I tried to milk it for a little extra sympathy but she wouldn't buy it.

I think a toe healers quicker than a finger, is that true? I know I heard it somewhere but not sure how accurate that really is. You would think so maybe just size wise.

I might tell someone that to try and make them feel better but I doubt if there is any real difference in healing time between the two. I would think though if anything it would be the other way around. A finger can be immobilized while toes get left to themselves.

What do you think?
