Subject: | BRAT or BRATY Diet Doesn't Work! | |
Because of the new chemo that is given to my sister, for the last four months she has been suffering from tummy troubles. Mainly she gets terrible diarrhea for over ten days for every three week cycle of her chemo. She tells her doctors that it is terrible and that she can't keep in any food that she eats and they told her that she is dehydrated and her potassium is very low. But so far, they haven't taken her off this new drug. They tell her to eat the BRAT diet. That is have Bananas, Rice, Apple Sauce and Toast. A friend says that the diet is now also called the BRATY diet to include live culture yogurt. She has tried all these foods and nothing seems to work. Does anyone here know of a good food to have that will help her tummy troubles? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! |

Soft food slike that go through your syetem like a train. what we discovered is something much better/ A plain cooked hamburger or plain roast beef. Broil a hamburger. ABout a 4 piunce patty will work. Add just a touch of salt. Then serve on a broiled or toasted bun. The idea is to give the bowel something Solid to work on., IT has worked for people whthe Infectious dystenteryu, unown eitiology dystentery, chemo pateints etc. The other choice is go to teh deli and get some thinly siced non flavored( no cajun bbq etc) roast beef. Serve on slightly toasted bread. Sure its dry but what it does do is absorb bowle acids and gives it something to work on. Stick with bagels, low fiber items., this just aggrivates teh situation in some cases. You want to avoid soft foods. You want something teh bowle can actuallyw ork on. Fried foods atr touchy. rememebr broiled boiled or baked. Roasts, roasted turkey, good breads, Tea, like pure Iced ttea. NO green tea as it contains elements that act like a laxitive. Russian caravan is really good with a spot of lemon and real sugar. Stick with non dairy for right now. She can get calcluim through a nice over ripe tomatoe. julie |

We will try some of your ideas today and hope it works. She has tried plain boiled chicken and some chopped beef with rice -- didn't work. She has tried black bread and whole grain crackers -- didn't stay with her very long. Roast beef would be a nice change. I have some chopped meat in the house to make her a hamburger today. I'll see if I can find the Russian caravan tea around here. I'll order it if I can't. I didn't know that green tea has a laxative effect. She drinks it all the time! DARN! We thought that drinking it was a good thing. Thank you so much for your ideas. We really appreciate it. |

A family member of mine was going through chemo and had similar problems. Her doctor told her to never eat fresh vegetable or fruits while on the chemo. She was advised to eat a variety of meats and dairy products and also pasta. After she cut out the fruits and vegetables completely she seemed to do much better. |

Unfortunately it may just be something she has to tough out to a degree. Id she gets too bad they can give her fluids intravenaously. Depending on the exact chemo mixture it may be a useless war, especially the first week after treatments. |
