Subject: | 1 in 4 teen girls has sexually transmitted disease | |
According to the CDC’s division of STD prevention, one out of every four teenage girls nationwide has an STD. HPV is the most prevelant at 18 percent, followed by chlamydia, which affected 4 percent; trichomoniasis, 2.5 percent; and herpes simplex virus, 2 percent. The highest overall prevalence is among black girls — nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD. That rate compared with 20 percent among both whites and Mexican-American teens. This, though disturbing, is not surprising. Many teenage girls have an "it won't happen to me" or "indestructible" mentality, and a few don't think about disease, they have baby fantasies. |

I agree. There is to much stress on sex in society and the media, and not enough education and discipline. I know kids are going to have sex, but we should not be enabling them as a society. |

Our society promotes sex with all the magazines, T.V. shows, and movies today. It's no wonder they don't have a problem with their sexuality. |

I think too many parents are afraid to teach kids how to protect themselves because they think it will "encourage" them. But the media is already doing more than enough encouragement; what's needed are facts about being safe, no matter what choices you make. |

I wonder how prevalent STD's were ten, twenty, thirty years ago. I know the statistics have steadily risen; but, you have to consider the rate of reporting was probably devastatingly low. They also didn't require healthcare providers to report STD diagnosis to the government until more recently. |

When you are a teenager you don't think it will happen to you. Plus, since you don't understand your hormones, and if you don't have decent guidance, then you will be more playful in the world. More education and parent involvement would help in some situations. |

Knowing this scares the heck out of me. I mean think about it, you never know what your daughter (or son) is doing out there while their "with their friends" or "at the movies". Teens lie, some are very good at it. Some don't think! Your child could get an STD very easily looking at the percentage of teens getting STD's. I don't have kids yet, but because of things like this I want to have a very close and open relationship with my kids so I can talk about things like this with them so they understand how serious it is. Maybe this will decrease their chance of doing something dumb behind my back and being at risk for an STD. |
