Subject: Medical Alert Jewelry

My sister has diabetes and cancer and it's suggested that people with those conditions wear a medical bracelet that can be read by emergency medical personnel if you are in an accident. I've tried to get her to wear one, but she refuses.

She says that she has all the important medical information in her wallet with her ID. She feels that wearing jewelry like a bracelet or necklace that has the medical symbol and her information on it makes her feel labeled and less of an independent person. She said that the jewelry announces that she's sick to anyone who looks at it and she'd rather not advertise her ailments to one and all.

She insists that her identification is enough. She has friends who have diabetes who also don't wear any alert jewelry either.

Do you wear any medical alert jewelry? Do you think people should?

I don't have anything that would worry medical people for any issues, but my sister is highly allergic to bees and has one in case she gets stung.

Wow, if I had a serious medical injury like your sister or her friends I would make myself wear one, appearance not included in my thoughts.

If it was that serious I don't care what people think, especially if it's risking my life!

Besides couldn't she take it off when she's out of her house? If she's in the house by herself then she could wear it, who would know?

Some of the newer alert jewelry is hardly noticeable that its for a med condition unless you're the EMT looking for it. They make watches, bracelets, and really nice stuff. I would wear one in an instant if I had an ailment that would benefit from the wearing. Its not like they are huge and gaudy.

I am diabetic as well and I wear a medallion on c harm bracelet that says " I have diabetes, please check my blood before treating me" it wa sfree from the diabetes research and wellness foundation.

I woudlnt wear one either. teh medicas that came for my daad didnt bother to check him or his wallet,

They wont check medic info in wallets anymore..

so you ahve to have something to stand out that says I am diabetic or you could wind up having a D5W( glucose) IV set up and kill you.

So for me I wanted soemthing feminine. I got a ncie charm bracelet and have the medalion as teh center piece and then charms i liek all around it. It jingles and teh red letterings stand out. I wear it all the time.

It isimportant that she find something that is conformatble to make her statement so that if G-D forbid anything happens she will get proper help and not become a statistic.

if you'd like to see a pix of my medic alert let me know!

If you think she may like one like i have let me know as well.........

I have worn my medic alert bracelet for so many years that I hardly notice it most of the time. It is a 14 carat gold bracelet because all the other kinds of diabetic jewelry I wore made my skin break out.
