Subject: Humidifiers...What are they good for?

What would be the benefits of having a humidifier in the house?

Someone told me that they can help minimize allergies and things of that nature. Is that true?

I don't know about minimizing allergies. I do know that a lot of houses are very dry in fact to dry for your health. Without a humidifier people living in these houses would be more prone to certain respiratory problems.

I know that they can be really helpful to people with breathing problems, and who are sick with respiratory issues. I had a lot of childhood battles with respiratory illness, and the humidifier was used in my room pretty much all the time.

So this may be a good thing to pick up for my niece who suffers from mild asthma and allergies. She's battled both conditions since she was a baby and lately as it has been warming up it seems her episodes are coming about more often.

I remember a friend of mine found an amazing deal on his first house but he failed to notice that they had dry heat. He spent most of his time getting each room (big house) its only setup to avoid having more allergies issues like ParDunn mentioned.

I know being in a place too humid can be bad, at least for me it does. I get nasty headaches from it all but if I can get near one when I am stuffed up, its gone within 1/2 hour.

A humidifier basically puts moisture into a house, easing certain breathing and lung conditions. Especially in winter, the air inside one's home can become so dry. You will notice dry, itchy skin and a dry scalp. You may also notice a dry, hacking cough. If you don't have a humidifier, simply place a large pot of water on the stove to boil, being careful that it doesn't boil dry.

I love my humidifier. Right now we are having a series of rains so it is off, but when the weather gets dry my allergies are horrible. If your nasal passages get too dry, you can't get rid of the pollen and the mucous gets too thick to move in your respiratory tract.
