There are so many different types of glucose monitors out there it has got to be hard to pick one if you just had to choose. My mother-in-law recently has shown an elevated sugar count and we are looking at purchasing her a monitor as a gift for Mother's day but have no idea which one would be the easiest to use. Any suggestions?

Most of the machines are about the same. Some do the test faster, some are smaller, some use less blood. But there really isn't a big difference in them at all.

I suggest that you make sure she doesn't have Medicare, if she does she can get a Blood Glucose monitor for free from most medical supply places. There are always deals around where the monitors are given away for free. Because the manufacturers know that they will make up the money by selling you the strips that you need to check your blood sugars, they can give the monitors away without losing any money. She might also be able to get strips for free too, if she is covered.

If she has any medical coverage, she might be able to get the machine and strips for free too, or for a smaller amount. It's worth it to check. Why spend big bucks for something she can get already?

If she isn't covered at all, she can still get the monitor for free. Look around at drug stores and medical supply places. Recently a well known drug chain was giving the monitors away. Check the back of the American Diabetes Association magazine, there are usually a couple of places that are giving the monitors away. She'll need to buy the strips, so you can make a gift of the strips. Now the strips are expensive!

Skatss is right, if she does have medicare or insurance, she may be able to get ahold of one at little or no cost.

If she has insurance, she will need to get a prescription to purchase the strips and lancets so they will be covered. Sometimes the doctors think you can just go buy them but the insurance usually will only cover the cost if there is an actual prescription specifying the strips and the lancets.
