Subject: Artificial Sweeteners

I was a big Equal junkie awhile back and started having problems. For one, I craved more sweets, which was exactly what I didn't want. I also never felt satisfied. I also heard so many others having negative effects, such as migraines, etc. I stopped using it and try my best not to use anything artificial at all. I now use a natural plant-based sweetener called Stevia. It takes some getting used to, but I like it. I mainly use it in teas and smoothies. I personally don't recommend it for baking, but I've only tried baking with it twice. I turn to honey, maple syrup, or demerara (I think that's how you spell it) sugar for baking.

Has anyone else had any issues with artificial sweeteners?

I don't normally have a problem with Equal but am unable to tolerate Sweet and Low. I'm not sure what the difference is between the too but I cannot take Sweet and Low at all.

We just learned about a week ago that swettners artifical do cause rebounding., Or over craving. theer is achemical in real sugar that cannot be duplicated. So our bodies will always be looking for it. So we often crave more sweets in looking for that chemical.

Equal began in 1940s as POhelyalanine mustard, a sweet drug used ot prevent birth defects and prevent down syndrom in over 40 age bracket women. The side effect was it was sweet. It allwed the brian cells to mature corectly and override a defect. Works great as medication. NOt as a general sweetner.

Most peopel develope, migraines, iver sensitive taste buds, a funnt atse in tehr mouth. more svere ae kidney propblems and seizures.

Equal and nutra sweet are supposed ot have warning lables on them elling the consumer of possible drug side effects. Just lie on a medication package. Some ahve done so and sales have dropped because of it.

The doctors at harvard adn standford hwoever noticed people ate less and craved less sugary stuff when they actually were alloted and given real sugar.

They noticed that teher was little n= to no differnce in blod chemistry and most were more satisfied with real sugar than with artificial. So whats teh outcome, go back to teh 1950s when they said, limit tabel souagr to 1 tabelspoon a day for non cravng of sweets. And you know it does work. I ahve been doing that since I was diabetic because we ae allowed tabel suagr and it does work.

There are times when artificial sweeteners have caused nausea, but I usually avoid using too many of them.

I think it is best to simply use sugar or honey as a sweetener and simply watch your consumption.

I heard something some time ago that these artificial sweeteners has some negative impact on persons who use them over a long term period. I can't recall exactly what it was, but I stay far from them.

I hate these things and I have no idea how they make them but they always seem to taste like crap. What can they do to you long term?

I also cannot tolerate Sweet n Low. I don't have any problems with Equal or other forms of Nutrasweet. I do crave a lot of sweets and it may be related. I've never connected the two before.

Wow! I've never heard this. I know that I crave sweets all of the time, but I thought I was just a big pig. I use Equal, Sweet and Low and Splenda all of the time. It just depends on what is available as to what I use at the time. I'm going to have to watch and see if my cravings coincide with my intake of artificial sweeteners. I bet it does. I've never heard of Stevia but I'll see if I can find it.

We use Splenda or a store brand of the same. Since, it is actually made from sugar; we feel more comfortable using it. With the other sweeteners, I can always taste the aftertaste. Plus, I don't care for the the reviews I have heard regarding asparatame.
