When The Facts Of Life?
|
|
In this day and age where things go so fast -- and there are a number of things out there that can kill you too -- at what age do you talk to your kids about the real facts of life?
When lack of knowledge can be deadly, I can see there's no reason to keep quiet, but what age is the right age?

I think it depends on what you're talking about. I'm teaching my 11-month-old that cars are scary and deadly so she doesn't go running into the street. Sure, it will make her fear them and burst her little "the world is perfect" bubble, but hopefully it will instill common sense.
The sex talk? That can wait.

What "facts of life" are you referring to?
Dangers you should teach about to children at an early age so that they will learn quickly and in-turn hopefully have the instincts when they become older of what they've learned.
The sex talk should be discussed in this day in age to girls 10-13, and boys 11-12, in my opinion.
There's a lot of sickos in this world. Protecting your child through proper education is important; so is protective parenting.

The 'facts of life' like not talking to strangers? Or not letting strangers/family members touch them in cetain places? These days there are so many imminent dange to our children that the earlier we get the message to them, the better their chances.

When they come up. I think for the most part. You just know it is time.

My daughter is seven, and we already had the sex talk. It was earlier than I had planned it simply because I was pregnant and she asked how the baby got there, and I told her the truth..eventually. She also asked if there was anything she could do to stop her from having a baby just in case she wanted to get married and not have children, so I went on to tell her about contraception pills and condoms, and while we were on the subject we talked about STDs too. It was only a brief conversation, but she seemed satisfied witht he answers to her questions.
